38 Weeks: Ready or Not

Wow...what a whirlwind life has been over the last few days. What started out as one of the scarier situations I have been in ended up with the sweetest little prize...Camden Joseph Smith <3 And while we would have loved to have let him keep cooking just a bit longer, it just wasn't in the plans. Luckily, he is here...healthy and just as snuggly as can be.

How far along?
Camden Joseph joined our family at 1:39 AM on Saturday August, 17th...exactly 38 weeks.

How big is baby?
5lbs 15 oz and 19.25" long- although at his check-up 4 days later they measured him at 18"; I was shocked and asked if he had shrunk lol, and the nurse said that it was more than likely that the delivery nurses weren't as precise on their measurements since it's not their main priority...she also said she didn't force his legs down to measure him...so it's likely that he is somewhere between 18 and 19" long.

Weight Gain
I never got a chance to weigh myself or go to my 38 week doctor's appointment...at my last appointment I was up about 21 lbs and steadily gaining (all that ice cream, and possibly the swelling I suppose lol!) So my guess is I gained about 25ish lbs total.

What's baby up to this week?
This week little man was shedding the white goo, called the vernix caseosa from his skin. I didn't notice or pay any attention to this when he was born...my mind was on other things, so I cannot confirm or deny if this actually happened ;)

Symptoms?
This week was really rough, and knowing now what the end outcome was it makes so much sense. I was exhausted, swollen in my feet/ankles, light headed, and just overall blah feeling. I felt this way leading up to my water breaking with Bennett so I assumed baby time was getting close.

Maternity Clothes?
I had set aside a whole section of the closet for things that fit and that I could wear to work. It was filled with lots of maxi dresses and light weight/short sleeved cardigans...turns out it was unnecessary. I went back to work Aug 8th and for in-service we wore staff t-shirts and jeans and even the first 2 days of school we were given jeans passes...soooo I really only had to get dressed in nicer clothes twice, which was nice especially because the weather took a turn for the HOT!

Sleep?
Sleep was terrible this week...and I started out life with a newborn with a major sleep deficit. I had a lot of trouble falling and staying asleep this week and then spent a night in the hospital being monitored and I slept terribly then...soooo I suppose I will sleep again someday :)

Missing Anything?
This week I was really missing feeling like myself and being able to get around and play with Benny easily. I was so tired and worn out after long days at work that I parented from the horizontal position pretty much all week.

Craving?
Nothing really...I was feeling kind of off all week so I didn't have much of an appetite.

Aversions?
See above...just about anything.

Emotions?
I feel like for most of my pregnancy I felt pretty good, but this week was overwhelming. I was tired and over it. I attribute most of that to the return to work exhaustion and being 9 months pregnant in August...100% would not recommend lol!

Movement?
Little man dropped this week so a lot of the movements were down pretty low, but he still managed to get a few kicks to the ribs...he is an active little guy!

Best Moment(s)
No contest here...hands down the best moment was when Camden was born. This birth experience was so very different from Bennett's (in a good way) and when the doctor pulled him out and held him up I swear our eyes locked...seeing his sweet face for the first time nearly made my heart burst out of my chest. Despite all my worries with him being born early he was perfectly healthy and I got to experience having him laid on my chest immediately (with Bennett he was whisked away because he wasn't crying) Meeting your child for the first time is such a life altering experience and is a high like no other.

Pregnancy Brain Moments
I am actually pretty proud of myself for keeping it together this week. Going back to work was a lot and there was SO much to do/finish before leaving on maternity leave. I am proud to say I had everything in order "just in case" so leaving on Thursday and not going back wasn't super stressful...plus I have the BEST long term sub and co-workers so I haven't had to worry about a single thing...even though I left right before our testing.

Looking forward to?
The next 12 weeks spent snuggling my sweet little boy!

Projects/Baby Gear purchased?
We had big plans to get everything wrapped up and ready this weekend because we knew baby time could be right around the corner...well...we didn't get our weekend, so here we are :) The good news is we have Amazon Prime and Target down the street...we will eventually get there.

We also had ordered a sign for above the crib that arrived last week and one of the letters was crooked...I had already been having second thoughts about our name choice, so when this happened I was convinced it was a sign. When I was admitted to L&D Thursday afternoon I dropped the bomb on AJ and we then spent the next few days trying to figure out what to do...and even after the baby was born we put off filling out the birth certificate until right before we were discharged. Naming a kid is hard work I tell ya...but the good news is we made a decision and feel good about it, and the Etsy shop offered us a full refund...so we are good there!

Running?
I only got out to run one time this week, and that was last Saturday. I felt pretty good on my run and felt confident I would be able to run at least a few more times...but then Monday baby dropped and walking became a treat and then boom he was born. I ran up until 9 days before Benny was born and I ran up until 6 days before Cam was born. Overall, I am really proud I made it as long as I did...and I am already itching to get back out for a run. Thank goodness this weather is less than ideal...so it makes it a little easier to be missing out!

Big Brother Moments
Holy smokes this kid has absolutely blown us away (yet again) with his laid back demeanor and go with the flow attitude. Life was crazy this weekend and he was bounced from place to place, person to person, and didn't get to see his mommy and he was perfectly fine. It helps that his Mimi and Aunt Catie are his favorite people...but still I expected it to put him out of sorts just a bit, but nope, still my happy go lucky little dude.

Seeing Benny meet his baby brother for the first time was a moment I won't soon forget. My mom brought him up to the hospital and AJ and I intentionally met him at the door without his baby brother...well, he saw us, ran right by us yelling "Baby brother, I brought you a surprise! It's a lovie" and then he immediately asked to hold him and kiss him. We sat them on the bed together and it was love at first sight. He just couldn't keep his lips off his baby brother...so many kisses. He even at one point said "I love you baby brother" and I couldn't stop the tears. I am so excited to see this little bond grow over the years.

37 Weeks: Back to School

I can't even believe how fast time has gone...I blinked and summer break was over. I am always a little sad to have to go back to work after a nice relaxing summer, but this summer is extra emotional...my last summer just me and my boy before his little brother arrives. We had such a good summer spending one on one time together and making memories and I just hated to see it end.

How far along?
37 weeks

How big is baby?
Romaine Lettuce; ~19.1 inches and 6.3lbs and gaining about half an ounce each day.

Weight Gain
I have no idea, and I am too lazy to get on the scale. I will find out (and maybe update) tomorrow at my appointment.

What's baby up to this week?
Baby's practicing some cool new skills: inhaling, exhaling, sucking, gripping, and blinking. I noticed the other day that I could see my stomach moving up and down and it wasn't me breathing...it was baby practice breathing...so cool!

Symptoms?
I am so darn tired these days...the littlest exertion of effort leaves me feeling like I could use a nap.

I have had some slight swelling in my ankles...which is weird because my feet aren't swelling very much, but my poor little ankles are puffy.

Other than that I am feeling pretty good...I am uncomfortable at times, but nothing super crazy.

Maternity Clothes?
This has been/will be my biggest struggling as of a few days ago. Going back to work means I can't wear yoga pants or shorts every day. I wore jeans to work on Thursday and Friday and nearly sweat to death. I luckily have several maxi dresses that fit and I will likely just get by on those for the next 3 weeks.

Sleep?
Sleep has not been great...I am having a lot of trouble falling asleep at night and getting into a deep sleep. I wake up 2-3 times minimum per night and have to use the restroom and then I have a lot of trouble falling back asleep. Add to that Benny had 2 nights this week where he woke up in the middle of the night crying for me and climbed out of his bed. Talk about an adrenaline rush...he falls back asleep easy but I am not so lucky.

Missing Anything?
Can I say summer break? While I do have to admit being at work is slightly easier than chasing a toddler around all day...I miss our slow mornings and nap time :)

Craving?
I really, really, really want a McDonald's crispy chicken snack wrap...but guess what? They don't make them anymore...devastated doesn't even begin to describe how I feel about that.

Aversions?
Nothing that I can really think of...eating has become a much less pleasant experience overall to be honest. I always feel like I stuffed myself silly even after small meals...so that's fun.

Emotions?
I would say I am feeling equal parts anxious and calm...if that makes any sense. I feel anxious about the fact that I have SO much to do at work to prepare and I am only 10 days out from when I delivered with Benny...I am hoping to make it as close to my due date as possible with this little guy...I would love to have everything wrapped up and ready to go before going on maternity leave...

However, I am also feeling pretty calm about things at home. I was super anxious about having every single little thing ready for Benny before he was born and this time around I am much more laid back. His nursery isn't quite done, I am not sure if we have everything purchased, etc...but I know from experience we aren't homebound after baby is born and Amazon has 2 day shipping ;) Anything I don't have I can easily get after.

Movement?
Lots and lots of strong pushes, pokes, and jabs. I feel the most movement at night when I am getting ready for bed. It's like he is having a late night dance party.

Best Moment(s)
Bennett started at a new daycare this week and to say I was feeling anxious is an understatement. He has been VERY attached to me all summer and I worried about how he would do with me leaving him somewhere new...

Well...plot twist...the first day I dropped him off at Miss Francine's he cheered as we pulled into her driveway and when we walked in the house he took his shoes off, looked at me and said "I go play now?" and when I said "Sure buddy, but mommy is going to work so come give me a kiss goodbye" he ran over gave me a kiss and said "Bye mommy, see you soon"

I was floored...he didn't even look back. My mama heart simultaneously broke and felt relieved all at the same time.  He was such a brave boy and made the transition beautifully. He went to Miss Francine's all week and every day was the same story...he couldn't wait to get inside to play and then at pick up he was sad he had to leave. I couldn't have asked for a better transition!

We owe a lot of that smooth transition to Miss Francine. She is the kindest, most welcoming person I have ever met. She set up a summer play date which allowed Benny to see her again and meet the other kids. Having that encounter and being able to talk about going to Miss Francine's in the days leading up to our first day really helped.

Pregnancy Brain Moments
I actually haven't felt too bad in this department. I am mentally all there...but physically I am so drained I can't seem to manage to accomplish anything.

Looking forward to?
Baby's birthday is #1 on this list...although I would prefer he wait a few more weeks. Another thing I am looking forward to is our new counter tops being installed...this won't happen until Sept. 13th...but having a date on the calendar is VERY exciting!

Projects/Baby Gear purchased?
We have hung just about everything on the walls and his room is 85% ready. I am hoping to get a few last minute things together...but like I mentioned before...if not, no biggie :)

Running?
I got out to run 2x this week and both times I felt pretty darn good. I am not having nearly the pelvic/hip pain I had with Benny and my swelling isn't too bad yet, which is so nice.

I was even able to run 1 mile without stopping at under an 11 minute mile pace, which is a win in my books. I made it to 37 weeks with Benny and that was really my only goal this time around so I can't decide if I am going to stop now or try and keep going since I am not super uncomfortable yet? Going back to work means I have less time to get my runs in...our mornings are sort of rushed unless I get up at 4:45AM and after school isn't happening because I am not pushing a stroller in this heat...and after Benny goes to bed...well I go to bed too :) so we shall see.

Big Brother Moments
He never ceases to amaze me with his laid back demeanor and ability to go with the flow. He has absolutely shocked me with how well he adjusted to not only going back to daycare, but going to a new place. He has had a lot of changes in his life in the last few months and he has handled them all with ease. He is such a good kid and we feel so very lucky!
